Who We Are

The Cedar Ruler (thecedarruler.com) is a personal homeschooling blog written and run by me, Daniel J. This policy explains what information is collected on this site, how it's used, and what choices you have. I'm not a lawyer and this isn't a corporate operation — I've written this to be honest and easy to actually read, not to bury anything in fine print.

Comments

When you leave a comment, WordPress collects the name, email address, and (if you choose to provide one) website URL you enter in the comment form, along with your IP address and browser user agent string, to help with spam detection. Your comment and that information are kept so I can recognize and approve follow-up comments from you instead of holding every comment in moderation.

If you have a Gravatar account tied to the email address you comment with, your comment will show your Gravatar profile photo. This means an anonymized, hashed version of your email address is checked against the Gravatar service (run by Automattic) to see if you have an account there. You can read Automattic's privacy policy at automattic.com/privacy for details on how they handle that. After a comment is approved, your profile picture is visible to the public alongside your comment.

If you check the box to save your name, email, and website in your browser when commenting, a cookie will be saved on your device so you don't have to re-enter that information next time. This cookie lasts one year.

Media

If you upload images to this site (for example, in a comment, once that's supported) avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included, since visitors can download and extract that location data from images on the site.

Site Visits and Server Logs

Like most websites, basic visit data (things like IP address, browser type, and pages requested) is logged automatically by the hosting provider as part of normal server operation. This is standard technical logging, not personal tracking. I don't currently run analytics software like Google Analytics, or any advertising trackers, on this site.

Cookies

Beyond the comment cookie described above, this site runs on WordPress with the Divi theme and a caching plugin (LiteSpeed Cache), which may set small technical cookies to keep pages loading quickly and the site working correctly. These are functional, not used to track you across other websites, and aren't tied to advertising.

If you log in to the WordPress dashboard — this applies only to me, as the site owner — WordPress sets a few standard login cookies.

Embedded Content

Posts on this site may, now or in the future, include embedded content (for example, a YouTube video). Embedded content from other websites behaves exactly as if you visited that website directly. Those sites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Affiliate Links, Ads, and Monetization

This site does not currently run advertising or use affiliate links. If that changes — for example, linking to a product I recommend through an affiliate program, or running display ads — I'll disclose that clearly on the relevant posts and update this policy to reflect exactly what's being collected and by whom.

Children's Privacy

This site is about homeschooling and family life, but it isn't directed at children and doesn't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. The comment form is open to any visitor, but I don't collect information about my own kids beyond what I choose to share about them in the content I write.

Your Rights Over Your Data

If you've left a comment on this site, you can request an export of the personal data I hold about you, or request that it be deleted. This doesn't include data I'm required to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated as the site grows — for instance, if I add analytics, a mailing list, affiliate relationships, or advertising. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated effective date.

Contact

This site doesn't have a dedicated contact page yet. For now, the fastest way to reach me is by leaving a comment on any post. A direct contact method will be added here as the site develops.
